Religious Variety and the Temple in the Late Second Temple Period and its Aftermath
10.18647/2878/JJS-2009
This article challenges the standard picture that religious variety within Judaism before 70 CE was focused on the Temple, and that variety was replaced by unity in 70 when the Temple was destroyed. Evidence is presented that different groups shared the Temple despite their disagreements on how the cult should be organised, and it is argued that the loss of this shared institution did not cause such groups to disappear, although it may have made it easier for them to ignore each other.

The Disraeli family and the history of the Jews
10.18647/3442/jjs-2020
One of the illustrated Victorian editions of WhistonÕs translation of Josephus, printed in London in 1848, contains Ôa Sequel to the History of the Jews; continued to the present timeÕ. The title page gives no indication of the origins of this Sequel, which comprises a substantial history of the Jews from the first century CE to the nineteenth century. This article discusses the reasons to suppose that the Sequel was composed by the literary historian Isaac DÕIsraeli and completed rapidly after his death by his children, Benjamin Disraeli and his sister Sarah. The composition and publication history of the Sequel shed light both on the Jewish identity of Isaac and on the complex attitude of Benjamin to the public debates on Jewish emancipation, in which he intervened dramatically for the first time in December 1847.

The politics of Judaea in the 50s CE: the use of the New Testament
10.18647/3415/jjs-2019
In an article in JJS LXVIII:2 (Autumn 2017), Peter Tomson took issue with my arguments against the traditional view that the politics of Judaea witnessed an increase in tension between Jews and Gentiles in the 50s CE. In responding to Tomson, this study examines in particular the New Testament texts he cites in support of the traditional view and enquires more generally into the value of the New Testament as evidence for Judaean politics in this period, with a close investigation, in particular, into the significance of Galatians 6:12 and the depiction of Agrippa II in the Acts of the Apostles.

The Arch of Titus at Rome and the Fate of the God of Israel
There is perhaps no more iconic image in Roman art than the spoils of Jerusalem panel on the arch of Titus at Rome, which memorialises a key moment in Vespasian and Titus’ triumphal parade of 71: the display of cultic vessels from the destroyed Jewish temple. In this paper I suggest that in the eyes of the Romans, the cultic vessels displayed in the spoils panel on the arch of Titus represented the God of Israel, captive and paraded through the streets of Rome. From the Roman point of view the destruction of the Jerusalem temple marked the end of the cult of the Jewish God, who was subjugated to Capitoline Jupiter. Hadrian’s reconstruction and dedication of Jerusalem to Capitoline Jupiter sixty years later represent the culmination of this process. In contrast, Josephus’ writings reaffirm a belief in the continued existence of the God of Israel and the anticipation of an eventual reestablishment of a sacrificial cult in the face of the contrary assumption among the Romans

Was Qumran a fort in the Hasmonean period?
This article considers the recent proposal that Qumran was a Hasmonean fort during Period Ia ( c. 140/130–100 BCE). An analysis of the published pottery and coins from Roland de Vaux’s excavations suggests that the earliest post-Iron Age occupation does not antedate the early first century BCE, while comparisons with Hasmonean forts contradict the identification of Qumran as a fort.

Josephus’ rendering of Latin terminology in Greek
Josephus lived and wrote in multilingual settings in Judaea as well as in Rome. While relatively few Latinisms have been found in his works, he had an obvious need to provide Greek terminology for Roman institutions. Often he simply adopted the then current translations. Yet in several instances there were multiple possibilities and one finds different usages in Josephus. This study concentrates on some of these cases and seeks to understand them, through source criticism and other means. In particular, it examines peculiar references to consuls in dating formulas, the terminology for ‘freedmen’ and its meanings, various ways to refer to the Emperor Augustus, and the adaptations of military terminology. Discovering some of the nuances of expression and learning to pay attention to them may help us to better understand the linguistic and cultural interactions Josephus was involved in, as well as the milieu in which his works were composed.
